Should cold-rolled or hot-rolled tubes be selected for heat exchangers?

 

Cold-rolled tubes are more suitable for heat exchangers. The cold-rolling process offers the following advantages:

Cold rolling allows metal materials to be processed at room temperature, resulting in improved mechanical properties and surface quality. Cold-rolled tubes have smooth surfaces and high dimensional accuracy, which enhances heat exchange efficiency.

 

2.   Corrosion Resistance and Pressure Endurance:

The cold-rolling process refines the metal's grain structure, improving its strength and toughness. This makes cold-rolled tubes more resistant to corrosion, high temperatures, and pressure, making them ideal for harsh environments.

 

3.   Manufacturing Precision:

Cold-drawn tubes have high manufacturing precision and uniform wall thickness, improving the seal and pressure resistance of the piping.

 

4.   Comparison with Hot-Rolled Tubes:

While hot-rolled tubes offer higher production efficiency and lower costs, their surface quality and mechanical properties are inferior to those of cold-rolled tubes. Hot rolling can introduce residual stress within the metal, affecting its overall and localized buckling characteristics. Additionally, the surface of hot-rolled tubes tends to be rough, and their structure and properties are less uniform than those of cold-rolled tubes.
